ĐÀ NẴNG — Trung Nam Group officially put into operation the first surface-mount technology (SMT) factory at the Đà Nẵng Hi-tech Park after three months of construction during a ceremony late last week.

The factory, which was built with an investment of US$7 million, is a milestone in boosting supportive industries and luring investment of hi-tech industries from the US, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore in Đà Nẵng.

Trung Nam said the factory with three production lines could produce 6.2 million electronic products per year before expanding production of hi-tech electronic products and printed circuit boards across regional and world markets.

The plant will help the development of a hi-tech electronic complex, including a research and development (R&D) centre, electronic component production hub, high-quality human resources incubation and training centre, producing printed circuit boards and electronic components for export from early 2021.

The debut of the factory was built with support and co-operation from experts and partners from Silicon Valley in the US.

General director of Trung Nam, Nguyễn Tâm Tiến said the factory will be a key step in building the 341ha Đà Nẵng IT Park as central Việt Nam’s ‘Silicon Valley’, and calling for investors from Silicon Valley and the US investing in healthcare, high-tech industries, Artificial Intelligence (AI), education, real estate and automation at Đà Nẵng Hi-tech Park and Đà Nẵng IT Park.

In 2019, two of the first Silicon Valley-based businesses – Meritronics AMT Inc and Ai20X Silicon Valley – agreed with Trung Nam Group to develop the Đà Nẵng Information Technology Park as an expanded ‘Silicon Valley’ in Việt Nam.

Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee, Huỳnh Đức Thơ praised efforts by Trung Nam Group in pouring investment in IT industries in Đà Nẵng.

He said the introduction of the SMT factory would help build a foundation for a prosperous high-tech centre in Đà Nẵng as well as in the region.

Thơ said it would be the first ‘made-in-Việt Nam' high-tech electronics manufacturing centre in Việt Nam serving global ‘giant investors’ in the future.

Earlier this year, the Government approved the Đà Nẵng IT Park as a centralised information technology (CIT) zone.

Trung Nam has completed the first investment phase on 131ha at the Đà Nẵng IT Park with an investment of $47 million. It plans to develop the second phase on another 210ha with estimated funds of $74 million fulfilling the first ‘Silicon Valley’ in central Việt Nam.

Universal Alloy Corporation – a leading global manufacturer of aircraft components for aerospace companies – from the US officially launched its factory for aircraft components worth $170 million, at the city’s Hi-Tech Park in March.
