HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is confident that no matter who will become the new US president will be fully behind the bolstering of Việt Nam-US ties.

Deputy spokesperson for Vietnamese foreign ministry Dương Hoài Nam made the remark on Thursday in response to a question on the possible impacts of the still-pending US presidential election between the incumbent Donald Trump and candidate Joe Biden to bilateral ties during a press briefing in Hà Nội.

After 25 years since establishing diplomatic ties, the Việt Nam-US relations have made great progress in substance and depth, which have laid a solid foundation for the two countries to foster and expand our relations, and together contributing to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation and development.

“We believe that any new US president will also support this process,” Nam said.

“Việt Nam considers the US to be one of our top partners on the basis of respecting each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political system and mutual trust,” Nam said, adding that the country hopes for the US to continue to foster the bilateral ties more substantively to this “long-standing and effective relationship.”

Việt Nam welcomes the role of the US and its initiatives that contribute to the maintenance of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region, including the US’ backing of ASEAN centrality, and ones that are harmonious with regional cooperation mechanisms and in line with international law, Nam said.

The deputy spokesperson of the Vietnamese foreign ministry also noted that the presidential election is the domestic affair of the US and the issue can only be decided by the American people.

Just last week, during the official trip to Việt Nam, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed the US' support for a strong, prosperous and independent Việt Nam, and pledged to maintain stable co-operation between the two countries.
